Before you leave

Before You Leave

There’s nothing worse than going abroad to find your phone doesn’t work and you can’t contact friends, family or colleagues, so before you leave make sure you check the following:

  1. Will your phone work?
  2. Un-bar your phone.
  3. Set-up Voicemail.
  4. Pack your charger & international adaptor.

1. Will Your Phone Work?

Phone networks in different countries use different frequencies so you need to check whether your mobile is compatible with the local network.

The types of frequency are:

Dual Band – Phone uses 900MHz or 1800MHz frequency bands and can be used in mainland Europe, Australia and most countries except America

Tri Band – Added to Dual Band is the 1900MHz frequency. This frequency will mean your phone can be used in the majority of America

Quad Band – Adding to Tri Band is a 850MHz frequency that allows usage in certain areas of America and South America

Most phones today utilise a Tri-band frequency but to check we have the following simple methods for you to see whether your phone will work abroad

A. Visit the GSM Arena Website

Enter your phone model in the top right search box and click on the returned results to see whether you have tri or quad-band frequencies. This is also a handy website to find any information about the model of your phone.

B. Check the frequency in the country you're visiting
Click here to visit a useful site that contains a table illustrating which frequencies are available in countries around the world

C. Simply call Yes Telecom Customer Services  who will happily help you.

2. Un-Bar Your Phone

For your phone to work abroad you need to remove its International Bar. This is a block that is put in place for your protection and you will need to remove this, only once, before you travel.

All Yes Telecom customers connected since 20th May 2008 will have their International Bar lifted automatically, unless requested otherwise. If you do still have an International Bar and wish to remove it, please email or fax Yes Telecom's Customer Services on customer.care@yestelco.com or 08700 777 881. Alternatively, email or fax your CARE Team directly. Click here to see your team and their contact details.

Please note that Yes Telecom cannot bar usage on the Isle of Man or on the Republic of Ireland.

3. Set Up Voicemail

Because of time differences, there may be occasions where calls go to your Voicemail. To access Voicemail abroad you must personalise the security code which is automatically activated whenever you’re overseas. This must be done before you leave!
