Data: a Quick Overview

From Mobile Broadband to email attachments, data usage is a phrase often discussed but never explained. Therefore, Yes Telecom has devised a rough guideline to explain what you can expect to get with your data usage, be that with your Mobile Broadband device, BlackBerry handset or Data Bolt-On.

   A rough guide to data...

1GB is equal to 1024MB
1MB is equal to 1024KB

1MB is roughly equal to:

50 average business emails, or

1 minute of an MP3, or
A 25 page Word Document, or
A 15 slide PowerPoint Presentation
20 emails with a one page Word attachment, or
5 typical internet pages (quantity varies by size, figures
based on the size of bbc.co.uk homepage)

These figures are based on what we believe to be for typical business use. Email size varies depending on whether there are graphics present and the length of a conversation. Therefore, we consider 20KB per email to be an ideal size.

Yes Telecom's range of Mobile Broadband tariffs and Data Bolt-Ons provides anything from 500MB to 20GB usage, so there are plenty of options for your requirements.

Vodafone's network is significantly faster and more reliable than other operators - that's the verdict of an independent study by LCC, the largest independent wireless engineering company in the world (June 2008). Access to the internet at broadband speeds when working remotely is now possible thanks to Vodafone's Mobile Broadband devices. For more information on devices please visit our Mobile Broadband page here.

How much data am I using?

Keeping track of your Mobile Broadband usage can be done within the Vodafone Mobile Connect software on your laptop. Simply click "View Usage" to bring up this information.*

From here you can also set limits so you are alerted when you reach a desired usage. To do this click on "Set Limit".

*Please note that the figure shown in the View Usage section is an approximate. For a more accurate figure click on your internet connection icon on your Task Bar (bar along the base of the screen, typically blue). This will show you how much data you've sent/received during your current browsing session.

Data Allowance and Fair Usage Policy.

Please be aware that your Mobile Broadband tariff will include either a monthly fair usage allowance or an inclusive data allowance. Using data above your allownace may incur additional charges or your service to be throttled. For full details on your tariff please speak to your Mobile Phone Business Partner or call Yes Telecom Customer Services.

Automatic Downloads

Be aware that many applications automatically connect to the internet to download updates, such as Anti-Virus software and Windows. This can prove costly so it is a good idea to disable them. This can typically be done within the application itself or through your laptop's Control Panel.

Cost:

The cost for using your Mobile Broadband device abroad depends on your tariff. For more information visit our Using Your Data Abroad page.

Networks:

Certain Vodafone Mobile Broadband tariffs have inclusive data that can be used in certain countries. Therefore, be sure to connect to the network that belongs to the country you're visiting. Roaming close to the border of another country may cause your device to pick up a foreign network that may not be covered in your inclusive data. For full details and a list of countries visit our Using Your Data Abroad page.

Providing instant email and office access with all the features of a mobile phone, BlackBerry is revolutionising the way people do business. For more information please visit our BlackBerry page here.

How much data does my BlackBerry use?

A BlackBerry is unique in that it uses special technology to compress data so less is used when receiving emails, compared to receiving an email on your home computer.

A typical email sent to a BlackBerry will use around 2KB of data
       (with no attachment)
A typical instant message uses around 100 Bytes of data.

Data Allowance and Fair Usage Policy

Whether you have a standalone BlackBerry Solution or a BlackBerry Bolt-On, your tariff is likely to have an inclusive data allowance or a fair usage policy. For full details on your data tariff please speak to your Mobile Phone Business Partner or Yes Telecom's Customer Services.
